Varicella vaccine

Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine · IAP

When to giveDose 1 at 15 mo; Dose 2 at 4–6 yr.
Dose0.5 mL SC. ≥1,000 PFU of Oka strain (varies by product). Lyophilised, reconstituted with sterile water.

Schedule / intervalDose 2 given 3–6 months after Dose 1.

Catch-up schedule

For those >12 years of age, the second dose is given 4 weeks after the first.

Adverse events (AEFI)

Mild local reaction; low-grade fever; sparse varicella-like rash in ~5%. Efficacy 70–90% (1 dose) → >95% (2 doses).

Special considerations

Live vaccine — contraindicated in pregnancy & severe immunosuppression. Can combine (MMRV) or co-administer with MMR. Store 2–8°C, protect from light.
