OPV vaccine

Oral Polio Vaccine (bivalent) · IAP / NIS

When to giveOPV-0 at birth (within first 15 days); OPV-1,2,3 at 6, 10, 14 wk; boosters 16–18 mo.
Dose2 drops orally. bOPV (Sabin): Type 1 & Type 3 each 10⁶ CCID₅₀.

Catch-up schedule

Missed doses — resume; do not restart. Can be given till 5 years.

Adverse events (AEFI)

Generally well tolerated. Extremely rare: VAPP (vaccine-associated paralytic polio) and VDPV.

Special considerations

Contraindicated (VAPP/VDPV risk) in immunodeficient patients and household contacts of such patients — prefer IPV. Store in freezer / 2–8°C.
